Support to improve adolescent reproductive health under VIE/97/P12

Country

Vietnam.

Period

1999-2000.

Recipient

Vietnam Youth Union, VYU.

Funding agency

UNFPA.

Description

The project objective was to be achieved through the following strategies:

  1. Raise awareness and understanding of adolescent reproductive health issues as well as carry out advocacy activities for identified key issues of ARH among and for policy makers and leaders of social/mass organizations, adolescents and youth.
  2. Develop IEC materials and channels of communication on ARH that are particularly suited for adolescents.
  3. Develop approaches and interventions to improve adolescents access to reproductive health information and services including STDs/HIV/AIDS prevention.

As part of the third strategy, new models for reaching the youth both in terms of information and services have been developed and are being tested. These include:

  • Setting-up two counselling centres in Hanoi and HCMC
  • Operating 13 hot-line telephones
  • Setting-up ARH-clubs in schools

In order to provide technical assistance in these areas, collaboration has been established with RFSU and the Danish Family Planning Association (DFPA), who has conducted an initial TA needs assessment mission as well as three training course missions to Vietnam.
