A Pilot Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Project for Migrant Women in Shanghai

Description  

The overall goal of the project is to reduce the number of STD and HIV-infected women and men and the number of unwanted pregnancies in the Shanghai area.

The specific goals are:

  • Increased capacity to deliver messages on HIV/AIDS, and increased support for the adoption of healthy and safer behaviors.
  • To have reached increased knowledge and understanding about HIV/AIDS and related issues through information and education campaigns amongst the target groups.
  • To have condoms available through social marketing at appropriate venues and outlets, which are frequent by the target groups.

Outcome      

In the beginning of the project the target group was extended from migrant women to include migrants in general, both men and women and the project was implemented in 15 different factories in the Shanghai area. The evaluation showed that:

  • Reduced number of STD cases. In one of the factories the number of STD cases had dropped from 50-60 cases in 2000 to 6-7 cases in 2002.
  • Sexuality courses for migrants with the participatory approach are continuously given in the factories.
  • Information about HIV/AIDS has through the project activities been distributed to around 50 000-60 000 people.
